On February 6, Colorado House Bill 1044 was shot down by Democrats in an 8-2 vote in the State, Civil, Military, & Veteran Affairs committee. This bill was sponsored by Rep. Ken DeGraaf (R-Colorado Springs) in order to protect the Second Amendment from big government infringement.
Titled the “Second Amendment Preservation Act”, its purpose is to prohibit “enforcement of federal laws that infringe on the right to bear arms.” This includes unnecessary taxes, firearm registration, and confiscation of firearms from law-abiding citizens.
Rep. DeGraaf argued that the government needs regulation of itself. Without that, Americans would have no way to protect themselves from crime, or from the government itself. He used countless examples of governments throughout history disarming their citizens and continuing to commit massacres and genocides. Totaling to an estimated 50 million deaths. When the opposition was faced with this argument, they responded that “the government will probably not do that anytime soon.”
This encompasses the issue at hand for the Second Amendment Preservation Act. It was written to protect American citizens from our government becoming tyrannical. This would be accomplished by stopping the Federal Government from enforcing the aforementioned infringements. Essentially preventing the government from ever encroaching on both the states’ rights, and individual rights.
The opposition continued to argue for the safety of our children, especially in schools. The purpose of this bill, according to Rep. DeGraaf, is “an insurance policy.” It simply protects the right to bear arms for those law-abiding citizens. Furthermore, the key to protecting our schools lies with the armed security that prevents school shootings.
Democrats argue this will increase school shootings. They argue that this will cause more gun deaths in America, but they do not mention the 1.67 million incidents per year that are prevented by a firearm, according to a Georgetown study. They argue for more gun control by the government, but do not mention the thousands of shootings in Chicago, despite some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.
Because the Left ignores facts like these, the Second Amendment Preservation Act was voted down.
